Tomorrowland has never really behaved like a normal festival.

It is closer to a temporary nation state: its own architecture, mythology, rituals, visual language and population. The music is obviously the reason people come, but it is not the only reason they remember it. What makes Tomorrowland powerful is the feeling of entering a complete world – one with its own symbols, scale, rules and emotional logic.

That is why it remains such a useful reference point for anyone thinking about live entertainment, immersive production and experiential technology.

Tomorrowland did not just go online

When the physical festival could not happen in 2020, Tomorrowland could have done the obvious thing: film DJs on stages and call it a digital edition.

Instead, working with Prismax, it built Tomorrowland Around the World as a digital festival island inside Unreal Engine. There were eight virtual stages, more than 60 recorded performances, forests, mountains, fireworks, lasers, lighting systems, virtual crowds and environments that would have been impossible, or at least wildly impractical, to build in real life.

The scale still sounds slightly mad: more than 500,000 3D people, around 8,000 DMX light fixtures and roughly one million viewers across two days.

But the real point is not the size of it. It is the mindset behind it.

Tomorrowland understood that a festival is not just a line-up. It is a place. A livestream lets people watch a performance. A world gives them the sense that they have arrived somewhere.

That is the creative shift more brands, producers and entertainment businesses need to understand.

But now in 2026 a year after the mainstage burned down, they have pushed on an innovated further. Their fully integrated Unreal Engine system controls everything… all like playing a game. 

From screen content to live systems

A lot of live-event content is still treated like finished video. It is designed, rendered, exported and played back on a screen. That can look beautiful, but it is also fixed. Once the file is finished, the content has largely stopped being alive.

Real-time production changes that relationship.

With Unreal Engine, the visual environment can remain active. Cameras can move through it. Lighting and effects can be triggered. Scenes can shift. Content can hold, stretch or change depending on what is happening in the room.

The screen stops being something you simply fill. It becomes something you operate.

This is not just a music thing

Tomorrowland gives the idea cultural scale. Festivals make the logic easy to see because they are already worlds. But the same shift is moving through product launches, sports, broadcast, retail, exhibitions and branded environments.

In automotive, virtual production has allowed physical vehicles, LED environments, augmented-reality layers and multiple presentation formats to sit inside one workflow. The point is not simply to make a product look futuristic. It is to create a flexible brand world that can carry the reveal, the live experience, the hero content and the follow-up assets.

In sport and broadcast, real-time environments are changing how stories are presented. A studio can become multiple locations. Graphics can live in the space rather than sit on top of the picture. Data, replays and visual explanations can be updated as the story unfolds.

In mixed-reality broadcast, presenters can stand inside the subject they are explaining. Weather is no longer just a map behind a person. It becomes an environment around them. That is a very different kind of clarity.

This is where experiential technology starts to earn its money. Not by making everything look more “digital”, but by making the creative world more flexible, more useful and more reusable.

A single environment can feed the live show, the broadcast, the interactive layer, the campaign content and the next version of the experience. That makes it more than a visual treatment. It becomes an asset.

The trap is making everything look like “the future”

This is where brands often get it wrong.

They hear Unreal Engine, virtual production, AR, mixed reality, LED volume and real-time graphics, and suddenly everything starts to look like a cyber lobby in a bank advert. Blue glow. Floating UI. Digital city. Abstract grid. Very serious music. Dead human energy.

The best use of this technology is not always the most futuristic-looking.

Tomorrowland used it for fantasy. Automotive brands use it for product storytelling. Broadcasters use it for clarity. Live shows use it for atmosphere, scale and responsiveness.

In each case, the technology has a job. It makes something feel bigger, clearer, stranger, more adaptable, more believable or more alive.

That is the standard.

Do not use technology to prove that you have technology. Use it to change what the audience can feel, understand or do.

Why this matters here

This feels especially relevant in the GCC, where spectacle is not exactly in short supply.

Dubai, Abu Dhabi and Riyadh are already full of launches, exhibitions, retail activations, sports moments, entertainment builds and destination experiences. People here have seen huge screens, projection mapping, holograms, AI avatars, immersive rooms and dramatic reveals with very expensive soundtracks.

So the bar is no longer “can we impress people with tech?”

The better question is: can we make the experience feel alive?

That is a harder brief, and a more exciting one.

A launch environment that shifts from keynote to reveal to social shoot. A retail space that changes by product, audience or season. A hospitality moment where scent, sound, projection and real-time content move together. A fan zone where games, leaderboards and content capture connect into one journey. A brand world that can be walked through, filmed, cut down, rebuilt and used again.

That is where the good stuff sits.

Not more screens. Smarter systems.
